Heat Wave: A Wake-Up Call for the Planet 🔥

Join the movement that’s turning up the temperature on climate action, sustainability, and community power.

Delhi-NCR can no longer afford to treat extreme heat and climate instability as temporary crises. These are long-term challenges that demand urgent, coordinated, and sustained action.

🌱 Why “Heat Wave”?
Because the world is literally getting hotter, and so is the need for immediate action. From rising temperatures to melting glaciers, we’re living in the consequences of climate neglect. This campaign channels that heat into energy, education, and empowerment.

Building a Heat resilient Delhi-NCR

  • Expand Green Cover. Large-scale tree plantation, with a focus on urban forests, green belts, roadside greenery, Highways peripherals.
  • Reclaim Blue Spaces: Protecting and reviving lakes, ponds, and the Yamuna River levels dropping, worsening water shortages needs to regulate the ambient temperature.
  • Cool Roofs and Green Roofs: Encouraging the use of heat-reflective materials and do partnership with local schools or slum areas to paint rooftops with solar effective paint. It reduces indoor heat by 5-7 °C.
  • New life, New Earth: Running community drives in hospitals to plant the seed of eco-awareness in new families. Supporting eco-friendly products. Hosting activities, workshops, and meetups around climate resilience and sustainable living to build a strong, active community.
  • Free Water Refill Stations: Set up refillable water stations during summer months for vulnerable group in crowded areas.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: Enforce strict rainwater harvesting in residential, commercial, and government buildings to combat groundwater depletion. Delhi loses over 30% of its piped water to leakage—this must be addressed through smart water infrastructure.
  • Energy Efficiency: Incentivize rooftop solar installations to reduce dependency on grid power and avoid blackouts during heatwaves.
  • Empower RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations), school eco-clubs, and youth volunteers to lead local climate actions.

Green Society of India is working tirelessly to bring ecological balance and relief planting trees, monitoring green cover, and mobilizing communities — but real change comes when this movement becomes mainstream.

  • 10,000 trees planted in collaboration with ITPO and others in 2024.
  • Over 50,000 trees planted to date, with a goal of 25,000 more in 2025.
  • Regular checks ensure trees grow healthy, up to 3 years of age with survival and growth monitored closely.
  • Annual report of 2024 study revealed that 80% of trees planted in 2018–19 are thriving—a testament to sustainable planning and care.

A Man-Made Inferno

  • Urban areas are up to 9°C hotter than nearby rural zones.
  • The abundance of concrete and lack of green spaces traps heat
  • Key hotspots include:
    • Palam & Najafgarh – Consistently record the highest temperatures.
    • Rohini & Pitampura – Densely built, low vegetation zones.
    • Gurugram & Noida – High emissions and concrete-heavy environments.
    • Chandni Chowk & Karol Bagh – Crowded areas with minimal air flow.

GSI survey findings in Delhi-NCR:
